On October 29th-30th, C-CBC Director Xiaotao Bi, Manager Siduo Zhang, Chinese members Prof. Guangqing Liu and and Prof. Huili Zhang were invited to attend the 7th China-Canada Joint Committee Meetings on Science and Technology Cooperation in Beijing. On the 29th, C-CBC representatives participated in the Sessions on Clean Technology and Researcher Mobility. The meeting on the 30th was a summary co-chaired by the Vice Minister of the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology also Director of the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, Mr. Jianguo Zhang, and the Vice Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, Mr. David McGovern.
During the meeting, the attendees reviewed the implementation of the China-Canada Science and Technology Innovation Action Plan 2016-2018 signed at the 6th Joint Committee Meetings held in 2016, as well as the progress of the intergovernmental projects between China and Canada. Cooperation reports and further cooperation proposals were presented in 6 areas: agricultural food and biological products, clean technology, health and life sciences, environmental technology and plastic pollution, local cooperation, and researcher mobility. The two countries agreed to continue to promote the construction of joint laboratories in the field of agricultural food and biological products, strengthen cooperation in research and development of clean technologies and industrialization, continue to promote fundamental research and vaccine research and development cooperation in the field of health, and actively explore the establishment of exchange programs for young scientists in China and Canada.
At the meeting, the "Cooperative Arrangement of the Joint Laboratory on Canola Genetic Improvement and Utilization by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada", the "Cooperative Arrangement of the Joint Laboratory on Bean Breeding and Comprehensive Utilization by the Jiangsu Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada", and the “Memorandum of Understanding on Science and Technology Cooperation between Nankai University and the Canadian National Research Council” were signed.
In total, there were over 80 representatives from China’s Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the Science and Technology Department of Jiangsu Province, a number of Chinese universities and colleges, and from Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, Global Affairs Canada, Natural Resources Canada, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Environment and Climate Change Canada, National Research Council Canada, the Quebec Provincial Government and some Canadian universities and enterprises attended the meetings.
