The 2nd Symposium on Biomass/Wastes Energy and Environment

The 2nd Symposium on Biomass/Wastes Energy and Environment

Location: Tianjin, China

The 2nd Symposium on Biomass/Wastes Energy and Environment (BEE 2019) will be held in Tianjin, China, on May 23-26, 2019. The symposium will be hosted by Tianjin University, which is the first modern-style University in China, established in 1895 initially named "Peiyang University".

BioEnergy is foreseen to play an important role in near-future energy picture in particular for oil and gas market. However, major disputes, such as food supply security, environmental and ecological uncertainties and associated biodiversity, are arising and spreading among politicians and the public. These disputes may significantly hinder BioEnergy development in the dimension of technical and policy aspects.

This Symposium aims to provide an open platform for sharing information related to updated development of BioEnergy technologies and policy as well as associated environmental concerns, so as to promote interactions among academics, government and the industries.

Topics

  1. Biomass/Wastes feedstocks and characterization

  2. Biomass/wastes to energy technologies: 1. bio-gas 2. bio-oils 3.bio-power 4.bio-diesel
    5.bio-hydrogen 6.bio-fuels 7. bio-char/bio-fertilizer

  3. Modelling and simulation

State-City Collaboration on Clean Energy Transformations

State-City Collaboration on Clean Energy Transformations

Location: Vancouver, Canada

Globally, cities are responsible for 75 per cent of energy consumption and an equivalent share of greenhouse gas emissions. A growing number of international bodies—including the IPCC, IEA, OECD and the Global Commission on Climate and Economy—have recognized not only the pivotal role of cities, but underscored the need for stronger collaborative governance. To successfully enable the clean energy transition, shared policy frameworks between local and senior levels of government are necessary.

The Clean Energy Ministerial, taking place May 27–29, 2019, will attract energy ministers, policy-makers and sectoral leaders from the world’s largest economies to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. With this global expertise gathered in Vancouver, there is a unique opportunity to deepen knowledge on the critical role of local governments and their relationships with senior governments in accelerating the clean energy transition.

Building on international precedents, Renewable Cities will facilitate a deep dive into practical senior-local government collaboration and provide a venue to transcend traditional silos through facilitated dialogue. Over the 1.5-days, this conference will convene plenaries and breakout sessions with an emphasis on expert and peer learning.

C-CBC Annual Workshop & Mission Innovation Advanced Biofuels Workshop

C-CBC Annual Workshop & Mission Innovation Advanced Biofuels Workshop

Location: Vancouver, Canada

Mission Innovation (MI) is a global initiative of 23 countries and the European Union. The Sustainable Biofuels Innovation Challenge (IC4) is one of the eight innovation challenges under the MI framework. It aims to develop ways to produce, at scale, widely affordable, advanced biofuels for transportation and industrial applications. The Sustainable Biofuels Innovation Challenge under MI is co‐led by China, Canada, India, and Brazil. The other participating countries include Australia, Denmark, the European Commission, Finland, France, Indonesia, Italy, Mexico, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, UK and US. IC4 also builds on existing knowledge of individual participating countries and international institutes e.g., IEA, IRENA and GBEP.

In conjunction with MI‐4/CEM (Mission Innovation Ministerial Meeting and Clean Energy Ministerial Meetings in Vancouver May 27‐29, 2019 ‐ http://cem-mi-vancouver2019.ca/), the co‐leads of IC4 in partnership with IEA, BC Bioenergy Network, and C-CBC are organizing a workshop to accelerate the commercialization of sustainable advanced biofuels. The theme of the workshop is “Pathways to Market”. The workshop will explore strategies for facilitating large‐scale supply of biological feedstocks and overcoming barriers to technology demonstration and commercial scale production of fungible biofuels.

Presentations will be on technology advances for production of fungible (i.e., fully compatible with existing infrastructure) biofuels with focus on sectors for which there is no other low carbon option (e.g., renewable diesel, biojet, renewable natural gas). This includes advance pre‐treatment and feed system developments as well as guidelines and design tools to reduce feedstock and supply chain risks. The workshop will also include policy and funding round‐tables on mechanisms and models for international collaboration and data sharing as well as approaches to overcome scale‐up challenges.

Attendance of the workshop is by invitation. Please email info@c-cbc.center to enquire.

Biochar & Bioenergy 2019 conference

Biochar & Bioenergy 2019 conference

The Biochar & Bioenergy 2019 conference will focus on bridging scientific, industrial, practitioner, and policy gaps in biomass utilization for biochar and bioenergy production. The US Biochar Initiative (USBI) promotes the sustainable production and use of biochar, and has hosted the pre-eminent North American biochar conference since 2009. The Bioenergy Alliance Network of the Rockies (BANR) will be celebrating completion of a large research effort to provide science-based underpinning for sustainable biofuel & bio-products creation from beetle-killed and residual wood feedstocks in that region. The meeting will draw attention to biochar and bioenergy science, technology, and sustainability issues at local-to-global scales.
Biochar & Bioenergy 2019 will be held in Fort Collins, Colorado, at the Lory Student Center on the Colorado State University campus. A small city nestled at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains a short drive north of Denver, Fort Collins routinely ranks among the best small cities in the nation for its ample access to outdoor recreation, Platinum Bicycle Friendly Community status, and ambitious sustainability goals. The conference venue provides easy access to Rocky Mountain National Park and a variety of of scenic drives and hikes as highlighted on our Sponsorship page, and there are a multitude of other 4th-of-July celebrations occurring across the state, from Frisco to Aspen to Durango!
