Our June Special Guests will be Dr. Mahmood Ebadian, Program Manager, International Energy Agency and Dr. Mohsen Mandegari, Manager & Scientist, BC SMART. Our Special Guests will be presenting on the topic “The Decarbonisation of Rail”.

Similar to other long-distance transport sectors (e.g., aviation, Marine, long-distance-trucking), the Canadian rail sector is actively pursuing ways to decarbonize its operations. Although good progress has been made in improved logistics/fuel efficiency (the Canadian rail-freight sector has reduced the intensity of its GHG emissions by over 40% since 1990), the GHG emissions and air pollution associated with ongoing diesel use is problematic. In the presentation, members of the BC SMART Secretariat will summarize their ongoing review of recent developments in the decarbonization of the rail sector with a focus on how bio/renewable diesel can be used as a readily deployable, low-carbon option, to reduce the GHG emissions of Canada’s railways.
