Mission Innovation (MI) is a global initiative of 23 countries and the European Union. The Sustainable Biofuels Innovation Challenge (IC4) is one of the eight innovation challenges under the MI framework. It aims to develop ways to produce, at scale, widely affordable, advanced biofuels for transportation and industrial applications. The Sustainable Biofuels Innovation Challenge under MI is co‐led by China, Canada, India, and Brazil. The other participating countries include Australia, Denmark, the European Commission, Finland, France, Indonesia, Italy, Mexico, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, UK and US. IC4 also builds on existing knowledge of individual participating countries and international institutes e.g., IEA, IRENA and GBEP.
In conjunction with MI‐4/CEM (Mission Innovation Ministerial Meeting and Clean Energy Ministerial Meetings in Vancouver May 27‐29, 2019 ‐ http://cem-mi-vancouver2019.ca/), the co‐leads of IC4 in partnership with IEA, BC Bioenergy Network, and C-CBC are organizing a workshop at the University of British Columbia to accelerate the commercialization of sustainable advanced biofuels. The theme of the workshop is “Pathways to Market”. The workshop will explore strategies for facilitating large‐scale supply of biological feedstocks and overcoming barriers to technology demonstration and commercial scale production of fungible biofuels.
Presentations will be on technology advances for production of fungible (i.e., fully compatible with existing infrastructure) biofuels with focus on sectors for which there is no other low carbon option (e.g., renewable diesel, biojet, renewable natural gas). This includes advance pre‐treatment and feed system developments as well as guidelines and design tools to reduce feedstock and supply chain risks. The workshop will also include policy and funding round‐tables on mechanisms and models for international collaboration and data sharing as well as approaches to overcome scale‐up challenges.
Attendance of the workshop is by invitation. Please email info@c-cbc.center to enquire.
