C-CBC will co-organize the 7th International Conference on Biomass Energy (ICBE2021) on November 24th-26th (Beijing time) in Xiamen, China. The conference will have online sessions as well for international attendees. C-CBC has also co-organized the 6th International Conference on Biomass Energy (ICBE2018) in Wuhan, China.

New UBC bioenergy facility set to pave way for carbon-negative future

A research and demonstration facility aimed at accelerating the development of low-carbon, market-ready bioenergy products and carbon-negative energy systems has opened its doors at the University of British Columbia.

Building on work conducted at UBC's Clean Energy Research Centre (CERC) over the past 15 years, the new Biorefining Research and Innovation Centre (BRIC) will bring together top academic researchers and industry partners to create leading-edge technologies that could significantly reduce our reliance on carbon-intensive fossil fuels.

C-CBC will co-organize a seminar with the UBC Clean Energy Research Centre (CERC) on September 29th: “Sustainable Aviation Fuel/Biojet Technologies - Commercialization Status, Opportunities and Challenges”. The speakers are Prof. Jack Saddler and Dr. Susan van Dyk from UBC Faculty of Forestry and IEA Bioenergy Task 39. The seminar will be hosted in Room 202 of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, UBC (2360 East Mall, Vancouver) and also on Zoom (Email siduo.zhang@ubc.ca for Zoom link). On Nov 25th, the C-CBC 2020 Annual Meeting was successfully held virtually. It was jointly organized by the University of British Columbia (UBC) and Hunan Academy of Forestry (HAF) and hosted by Prof. Changzhu Li, the Director of HAF and a core member of C-CBC.

Wuhan University of Technology visited C-CBC

On Sep 25th, a delegation from Wuhan University of Technology (WUT) in China visited C-CBC at UBC. The delegation is led by the Vice President Dr. Wen Chen along with several Deans and staff members. C-CBC members at UBC introduced C-CBC and the UBC Faculty of Applied Science to the delegation and learned about WUT's key research areas. WUT is interested in collaborations on Joint Degree program and scholar and students exchanges. Faculty members from the two universities had a productive meeting to exchange ideas and made tentative plans. The group will keep in touch for potential collaborations.

Prof. Anthony Lau visited Chinese member Guangzhou Institute of Energy Conversion

On August 3rd, C-CBC member Prof. Anthony Lau visited Prof. Xiuli Yin at the Chinese partner institute - Guangzhou Institute of Energy Conversion, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The professors have been jointly awarded funding from Guangdong Province under its Innovation Strategic Program on International Cooperation in Science and Technology in 2018. The title of the project is “Research on thermochemical conversion mechanism of solid and liquid wastes from pulp and paper industry". During this visit, Prof. Lau and Prof. Yin discussed the progress of the project, learned about the new research work and achievements from each institution, and formulated plans for future collaborations.

C-CBC Released 2018-2019 Annual Report

Since the last report in July 2018, C-CBC has recruited 4 faculty members and 3 member organizations, with a current membership of 76 researchers and 40 organizations. Four China-Canada teams have been awarded significant research grants in provincial and federal programs. The Biorefining Research and Innovation Centre (BRIC) funded by the Canadian Foundation of Innovation (CFI) in 2017 is under design and the construction will start in fall 2019 at UBC. Another major funding has recently been granted by Western Economic Diversification Canada, supporting a BioAlliance project on the production of synthesis gas and renewable natural gas (RNG) from forest residues. C-CBC co-organized the 6th International Conference on Biomass Energy (ICBE 2018) in October 2018 at Wuhan, China, and co-organized the 2nd International Conference on Sustainable Biofuels with Mission Innovation (MI) in April 2019 at Yantai, China. We also initiated and led the Bioenergy Dialogue of the Canada China Track II Energy Dialogue and hosted the first meeting in Beijing in January 2019. In terms of student and scholar training, C-CBC has hosted 17 new postdoctoral fellows, visiting scholars, and visiting students from Chinese member universities.

C-CBC 2019 Annual Meeting Held at UBC

The C-CBC 2019 Annual Meeting was successfully held on May 31st at the University of British Columbia (UBC). The members discussed plans for the next year. C-CBC will keep leading the Bioenergy Theme of the Canada China Track II Energy Dialogue, and stay involved in the Sustainable Biofuels Innovation Challenge (IC4) of Mission Innovation (MI) initiative. Members will actively apply for new collaboration programs at all levels. Technology development will be further supported and more student and scholar exchanges will be facilitated.

C-CBC Co-organized Advanced Biofuels Workshop

On May 30-31, C-CBC co-organized the IC4 Advanced Biofuels Workshop: Pathways to Market, at the University of British Columbia. It’s a workshop with Mission Innovation (MI) which is a global initiative of 23 countries and the European Union. The theme of the workshop is “Pathways to Market”. Specifically, it is “how to connect dots across the supply chain to produce and use low-carbon fungible biofuels”. The attendance reached over 130 participants from federal and provincial governments, industry, financial sector, advisory groups and universities to give presentations and exchange ideas.

BC Pulp & Paper Bioproduct Alliance (BC Bio-Alliance) received $2.38 million federal funding from Western Economic Diversification Canada

On Apr 18th 2019, Western Economic Diversification Canada announced $2.38 million funding towards the research and testing of clean technologies that generate renewable natural gas (RNG) from forest residues, led by Prof. Xiaotao Tony Bi at the University of British Columbia (UBC). The project will be spearheaded by the UBC BioProducts Institute together with the BC Pulp & Paper Bio-Alliance, a formal partnership between UBC, FPInnovations, the British Columbia (BC) provincial government and all the BC pulp and paper companies.
