C-CBC Annual Workshop & Mission Innovation Advanced Biofuels Workshop

In conjunction with MI‐4/CEM (Mission Innovation Ministerial Meeting and Clean Energy Ministerial Meetings in Vancouver May 27‐29, 2019 ‐ http://cem-mi-vancouver2019.ca/), the co‐leads of the Sustainable Biofuels Innovation Challenge (IC4) in partnership with IEA, BC Bioenergy Network, and C-CBC are organizing a workshop at the University of British Columbia to accelerate the commercialization of sustainable advanced biofuels. The theme of the workshop is “Pathways to Market”. The workshop will explore strategies for facilitating large‐scale supply of biological feedstocks and overcoming barriers to technology demonstration and commercial scale production of fungible biofuels.

Mission Innovation (MI)- the 2nd International Conference on Sustainable Biofuels Held in Yantai

On April 2nd to 4th, 2019, the "Mission Innovation (MI)- the 2nd International Conference on Sustainable Biofuels" co-organized by the Guangzhou Institute of Energy Conversion, the Science and Technology Department of Shandong Province and the Yantai Municipal Government, was successfully held in Penglai, Yantai. More than 70 experts and scholars from 10 countries, representatives of governments and enterprises at all levels attended the opening ceremony. C-CBC Director Xiaotao Bi, member Longlong Ma, Fernando Preto attended the conference.

C-CBC Awarded Funding from National Research Council (NRC) Canada

Congratulations to two groups of C-CBC member organizations for being awarded funding from the Canadian International Innovation Program (CIIP), National Research Council Canada (NRC). They are our industry member Nexterra Systems Corp. with Beijing University of Chemical Technology, and Highbury Energy Inc. with Huazhong University of Science and Technology. The awarded projects are “Biomass gasification technology research, development and application” and “Breakthrough Technologies for Bottlenecks in Renewable Liquid Fuels from Wastes”, respectively. C-CBC has been included to the “Canada-China Joint Science and Technology Action Plan 2016-2018” since 2016 thus its members qualify for this designated program. C-CBC will strive to gain more opportunities like this for our members.

C-CBC hosted bioenergy meeting for Canada China Track II Energy Dialogue

On January 18th 2019, C-CBC successfully hosted a bioenergy meeting at Beijing University of Chemical Technology for the Canada China Track II Energy Dialogue. C-CBC directors Xiaotao Bi and Tianwei Tan led discussions among a group of academic and industry experts from the two countries on bioenergy development, challenges, and opportunities.

C-CBC awarded funding from Guangdong Province, China

Congratulations to C-CBC partner organizations Guangzhou Institute of Energy Conversion (GIEC) and UBC for having received funding from Guangdong Province under the Innovation Strategic Program on International Cooperation in Science and Technology. The Principal Investigators are Prof. Xiuli Yin (GIEC), Prof. Anthony Lau, and Prof. Xiaotao Bi. The title of the project is “Research on thermochemical conversion mechanism of solid and liquid wastes from pulp and paper industry". It includes techno-economic analysis on pre-treatment methods of pulp and paper industrial wastes, formation mechanism and controllable transformation of nitrogen oxides precursors from thermochemical conversion process of pulp and paper industrial wastes, pyrolysis and gasification characteristics of pulp and paper industrial wastes and catalytic reforming of tar.

C-CBC Representatives attended the 7th China-Canada Joint Committee Meetings on Science and Technology Cooperation

On October 29-30, C-CBC Director Xiaotao Bi, the Manager Siduo Zhang, Chinese members Prof. Guangqing Liu and and Prof. Huili Zhang were invited to attend the 7th China-Canada Joint Committee Meetings on Science and Technology Cooperation. The meetings were held in Beijing. On the 29th, C-CBC representatives participated in the Session Meetings on Clean Technology and Researcher Mobility. The 30th was the all-members summary meeting co-chaired by the Vice Minister of the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology also Director of the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, Mr. Jianguo Zhang, and the Vice Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, Mr. David McGovern.

Delegation from Asia Pacific Foundation met with C-CBC Directors

On October 30th, a delegation from the Asia Pacific Foundation (APF) led by its President and CEO Stewart Beck met with C-CBC Directors Xiaotao Bi and Tianwei Tan at Beijing University of Chemical Technology (BUCT). They discussed bioenergy's role and contribution to the overall energy portfolio in the two countries, and prepared for the next Track II Energy Dialogue meeting between Canada and China.

C-CBC Members visited Hunan Academy of Forestry

On October 19th, at the invitation of C-CBC member Dr. Hui Li, 4 Canadian members visited Hunan Academy of Forestry (HAF) in Changsha, China. The 4 members are Prof. Jim Lim, C-CBC Manager Siduo Zhang, Postdoctoral Fellow Dr. Ziliang Wang, and PhD student Long Cheng. HAF is one of C-CBC's founding member institutes and so far the only academic member organization in Hunan Province. Up to now, HAF has signed a memorandum of understanding with the University of British Columbia, co-published 7 SCI papers, and facilitated 18 scholar exchanges and visits.

C-CBC Co-organized the 6th International Conference on Biomass Energy (ICBE 2018)

The 6th International Conference on Biomass Energy (ICBE 2018) was held in Wuhan successfully from October 16 to 19, 2018 to further explore the future development of the biomass energy industry and promote the exchange and innovation of biomass energy academia. The conference was jointly organized by the China Renewable Energy Society - Biomass Energy Committee, The China Biomass Innovation Alliance, and Huazhong University of Science and Technology. C-CBC is one of the co-organizers. Over 20 C-CBC members served on the conference committee or attended the conference. The co-chairs of the conference are also our members.

On Oct 14th, the Shenzhen Talent Training Institute held a symposium on energy and environment. C-CBC Director Xiaotao Bi was invited to exchange ideas with distinguished talents in Shenzhen and to discuss global environmental protection and new energy technology development trends.
